DRONES, UAV, SUAS OR UAS?
This is the most common question we come across, even in our personal lives. Most of us have been flying Unmanned aircraft overseas for decades, even before there was common knowledge of their existence. The easy answer, typically they are all the same thing! But nothing is that simple, unfortunately.
Drones - The most common term adopted by the media and non-pilots. So we have all accepted it as a term. The true definition of a drone, in our industry, is a stationary aerial object, usually a weather balloon or target. Today a drone is any airborne unmanned vehicle, so feel free to use this term. fun fact: Drones were used all the way back in 1839, they were hot air balloons flown autonomously.
UAV - This is a common term we use to identify our aircraft. It stands for, Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). This is a term used specifically to address the aircraft itself. Fun fact: We call them birds.
sUAS - This term stands for Small Unmanned Aerial System (sUAS), this refers to the entire system; from the ground control station, controllers and the Aircraft itself. It refers to all aircraft below 55 lbs (25kg), specifically, denoted by the proceeding lowercase "s."
UAS - The entire system, Unmanned Aerial System (UAS,) this is every Unmanned aircraft 55lbs (25kg) and up. Mostly comprised of aircraft the size of actual planes or bigger.
